Preparing Children for Hospital Visits: The "HC And" App
Developed in collaboration with the Oncology Department at Odense University Hospital, hospitalized children and their families, and 10:30 Visual Communication, "HC And - When mother or father has cancer" is a patient information app designed for children aged 4-7. Its goal is to ease anxiety and prepare young patients and their families for hospital visits, particularly when a parent has cancer. Many hospital terms are unfamiliar to this age group, making this app a valuable resource.
"HC And" uses a child-friendly approach, featuring narration in a child's voice and interactive animations. The learning style is geared towards play-based understanding, making it accessible via tablets, mobile phones, and touch screens.
Recognizing that young children process information best through play and concrete examples, and that they can easily become overwhelmed, "HC And" is structured as a series of short, easily digestible segments. This allows children to engage at their own pace.
The app comprises seven short stories explaining cancer, chemotherapy, and radiotherapy in an age-appropriate manner. Hospital staff can utilize this resource as an educational tool to foster a shared understanding with young patients.
"HC And" is available for free download.
