Legends whisper that Pharaoh Zanik, a once-wise ruler, made a terrible pact with the Serpent of the Dunes, an entity born of forgotten gods. To save his people from a great drought, Zanik sacrificed his soul and sealed the desert’s magic within the Sands of Eternity, a cursed relic that now bleeds life from the land.
Now, centuries later, the desert is dying. Crops wither. Water wells dry. And the sand itself whispers in a tongue long lost.
But a new wind stirs.
Chapter I: The Call of the Sunken Temple
You are a Cultivator of the Forgotten, a seeker of truths buried beneath the sands. Your journey begins when you find a broken amulet in the ruins of a forgotten shrine near Lletya—a moon-shaped pendant etched with the face of a pharaoh.
The amulet pulses as you hold it.
"The desert remembers. The Pharaoh’s folly must end. But who will bear the cost?"
You are drawn to the Temple of the Hollow Sun, hidden beneath a shifting dune, where the Oracle of the Sands speaks through the wind:
"To alter the desert’s fate, three keys must be forged:
— The Heart of the Dune,
— The Tongue of the Wind,
— And the Breath of the Forgotten."
Chapter II: The Three Trials of the Sands
1. The Heart of the Dune – Beneath the Dunes of Ash
To find the Heart, you must descend into the Under-Sands, a labyrinth of crumbling tombs and ancient traps. Here, you face Za’kara, the Sand-Wraith, guardian of the Pharaoh’s lost memories.
Challenge: Recite the Lament of the Pharaoh—a forgotten prayer in Kharidian tongue—to calm the wraith.
Reward: The Heart of the Dune, a glowing crystal that pulses with buried sorrow. It reveals visions of Zanik’s true sin: not greed, but love. He sacrificed his daughter to bind the Serpent, believing he was saving the people.
2. The Tongue of the Wind – The Oasis of Whispers
You journey to Shattered Oasis, a cracked mirage where voices of the dead swirl in the air. There, you must speak with Kaela, the Wind Speaker, a spirit bound to the dunes.
Challenge: Learn the Six Songs of the Desert Wind, sung by the desert’s creatures. Fail, and you are lost in an endless loop of echoes.
Reward: The Tongue of the Wind, a silver flute that can command the sandstorms. With it, you can summon the Sand Cyclone—a force powerful enough to break the Serpent’s prison.
3. The Breath of the Forgotten – The Cavern of Echoes
Deep in the Catacombs of the Unnamed, you face the Last Sacrifice: a mirror that shows not your face, but the face of every soul who died for the desert’s peace.
Challenge: Confess your true desire—not to conquer, not to save, but to understand. Speak the name of someone you’ve lost.
Reward: The Breath of the Forgotten, a vial of glowing sand that holds the final memory of the Pharaoh’s daughter. It carries her final words:
"Father… I forgive you. Save the living, not the past."
Chapter III: The Choice Beneath the Hollow Sun
With all three keys, you reach the Sanctum of the Hollow Sun, where the Sands of Eternity are sealed beneath a cracked obsidian throne.
The Serpent of the Dunes emerges—not as a monster, but as a twisted, weeping spirit, its body made of sand and sorrow. It speaks in the voice of Zanik’s daughter.
"I was not a curse. I was a promise. He thought he was saving you. But he doomed us all."
You are given three choices:
🔹 Option 1: Break the Seal (The Path of Sacrifice)
Use the three keys to shatter the Sands of Eternity. The desert will reclaim itself—wild, untamed, free of magic. But Ardougne will vanish beneath the dunes. The people will either flee or perish.
“The desert remembers. It will not be tamed.”
🔹 Option 2: Rebind the Serpent (The Path of Control)
Seal the Serpent again—this time, under a new pact. You become the Keeper of the Dunes, ruler of the desert. But you must give up your soul to maintain the balance. The desert thrives, but you are trapped in eternal vigil.
“I will watch. I will wait. I will never rest.”
🔹 Option 3: Release the Memory (The Path of Truth)
Instead of breaking or binding, you release the truth. You speak the daughter’s name aloud and hand her the Breath of the Forgotten.
The Serpent dissolves into light. The Sands of Eternity crumble. The desert heals—but slowly. Crops return. Water flows again. But magic fades from the sands.
"The folly was not in the pact… but in forgetting why it was made."
And in the silence, a single sandstone tablet appears. Carved in Kharidian:
"The desert is not your enemy. It is your memory."
Epilogue: The New Age of the Sands
If you chose Option 1, Ardougne is reborn as a ghost city, but the dunes bloom with wildflowers. Survivors call it "The Land That Remembered."
If you chose Option 2, you become the Keeper, a silent guardian seen only at dusk, walking the dunes with the flute in hand.
If you chose Option 3, the desert becomes fertile again. New towns rise—New Ardougne, Zanik’s Vale, and The Oasis of Echoes, where children learn the truth of the Pharaoh’s Folly.
And somewhere, in the wind, you hear a whisper:
"Thank you."
