A domino set typically contains 28 tiles (though larger sets exist for games like Mexican Train and Chicken Foot). Each tile is divided into two square ends, each marked with a number of pips or blank. Different countries have their own favorite variations: England (Muggins), Scandinavia (Bergen), Mexico (Mexican Train), and Spain (Matador).
Dominoes originated in Song Dynasty China. They spread to Italy in the 18th century, evolving into the modern game we know today.
Gameplay Overview:
Blocking Games:
The most basic domino game involves two players and a double-six set. Players draw seven tiles, and the goal is to be the first to play all your tiles by matching numbers on adjacent tiles. The game ends when a player wins or the game is blocked. Starting tiles vary by game (e.g., highest double in Muggins, 0-0 in Bergen, next lower double in Mexican Train).
Scoring Games:
Many games involve scoring points based on tile configurations or emptying your hand. Muggins (All Fives) requires making open ends sum to multiples of five, while Bergen awards points for matching open ends. In Mexican Train, the double-zero domino is worth 50 points. If a player doesn't call "domino" before placing a tile, and another player calls it afterwards, the first player must draw an extra tile.
Draw Games:
In draw games (blocking or scoring), players can draw tiles from the stock before playing. The score is the total pips in the losing player's hand and the remaining stock.
