Polish developer 11 Bit Studios has unveiled another trailer for their eagerly awaited sci-fi adventure, The Alters, which is inching closer to its launch. Amidst the excitement, the studio paused to reminisce about their landmark project, This War of Mine, which catapulted them to international acclaim over a decade ago.
While This War of Mine is renowned for its somber and despairing ambiance, The Alters shifts the narrative towards a more vibrant and frequently humorous tone, focusing on the trials of alternate versions of the protagonist, Jan Dolski. Despite their distinct atmospheres, the developers stress a deep thematic link between the two games.
Although set in different worlds and embodying different tones, both titles center on the core theme of survival. In This War of Mine, players must navigate the brutal realities of war within a besieged city, meticulously managing resources and facing daily trials to keep their group alive. Conversely, The Alters frames survival as a frantic race against time, where players must continually relocate their mobile base to escape an unrelenting sun that turns everything into dust.
Both games challenge players to step beyond their comfort zones, compelling them to explore dangerous territories in pursuit of vital resources. The primary distinction is in the protagonists: This War of Mine has players leading a group of ordinary civilians, whereas The Alters introduces a unique team made up of different versions of the main character.
The Alters is scheduled for release in 2025 and will be available on PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X|S. Excitingly, it will be accessible on Xbox Game Pass and PC Game Pass from day one, offering subscribers an immediate dive into this innovative sci-fi adventure.
