If you're a fan of scavenging resources while evading PvE threats and outsmarting PvP opponents, ARC Raiders is likely to captivate you. However, if you're seeking something entirely new, you might find the game's heavy reliance on established tropes less appealing.

The game pays homage to its predecessors unabashedly, with the hero's default melee weapon being a pickaxe, a nod to Fortnite's iconic tool. This homage is just one example of how ARC Raiders borrows heavily from other popular titles in the survival and battle royale genres. While originality might be lacking, the game's mechanics are well-integrated, resulting in a satisfying gameplay experience.

The objective of each round is straightforward: venture to the surface, gather superior loot, and return underground safely. Two primary threats stand in your way. The first are the ARC, AI-controlled battle robots patrolling the map for signs of organic life. These robots range from small, spider-like scurriers that can be unnerving, especially for those with arachnophobia, to larger, more formidable crawlers. The ARC are particularly dangerous in groups, and the game cleverly places clusters of these robots with complementary abilities, sometimes hidden indoors, to catch players off guard. Defeating an ARC can yield valuable rewards like ammo and weapon components.

The second, and perhaps more lethal, threat comes from other human raiders. In ARC Raiders, vigilance is key, as the game is filled with players ready to ambush you at any moment. It's often more strategic to target a well-equipped player than to spend time searching through warehouses or waiting near extraction points. The game's environment fosters a constant sense of danger and competition.

Combat in ARC Raiders is solid and satisfying. The third-person controls are standard for modern shooters, with predictable handling of firearms and impactful melee attacks. SMGs feel lively yet challenging to control, assault rifles are steady and robust, and sniper rifles deliver powerful shots.

Playing in teams of three adds a layer of strategy to the gameplay. Coordinating with your squad allows for systematic searching and covering, leading to tactical firefights where flanking and ambushes become key elements. The game's maps are designed to draw players towards the most valuable resource hubs, creating hotspots for intense encounters and strategic positioning.

The game's environments, while functional, lack a distinctive flair, resembling a gritty version of Fortnite's settings. The focus here isn't on immersive lore but on engaging gameplay. ARC Raiders might not dazzle with its world-building, but it delivers a robust and enjoyable experience.

Every drawer and cabinet you encounter could hold valuable resources such as crafting components, ammo, shields, healing items, and weapons. Ammunition is categorized into light, medium, heavy, and shotgun types, encouraging players to scavenge and craft strategically. Materials come in various rarity levels, allowing you to create more advanced items. A special inventory slot ensures that your rarest finds remain secure even upon death.

Some containers require time and noise to open, adding a thrilling layer of tension, especially when playing solo. This mechanic heightens the sense of vulnerability as you fumble with locks, unaware of potential threats nearby.

Between rounds, you retreat underground to convert your loot into better gear using crafting tables. You can also sell materials for cash or buy pre-crafted items. An intriguing element involves crafting with a live rooster, though its purpose remains a mystery.

As you explore the surface, you earn experience points that unlock a series of Skill Trees. These allow you to tailor your character to your preferred playstyle, enhancing combat, mobility, or stealth. Each upgrade feels meaningful and contributes to your overall progress.

The character customization options are initially basic, but premium currency unlocks more appealing textures and outfits. While I chose to create a deliberately bleak avatar, my multiplayer partner sported a stylish, ZZ Top-inspired look that I envied.
