How To Get Armadillo Scutes in Minecraft

Found across various warm biomes, the Armadillo was introduced in Minecraft 1.20.5 as part of the “Armored Paws” update. This passive, scute-covered mob plays a crucial role in crafting Wolf Armor—a new way to protect your loyal canine companions. Here’s everything you need to know about collecting Armadillo Scutes in Minecraft.

How to Get Armadillo Scutes in Minecraft

Armadillos spawn exclusively in warm biomes, typically appearing in small groups of two or three. When approached too quickly, they roll into a protective ball, making scute collection impossible. To prevent this, approach them slowly and carefully.

Biomes where Armadillos can be found:

  • Badlands
  • Eroded Badlands
  • Savanna
  • Savanna Plateau
  • Windswept Savanna
  • Wooded Badlands

Once you’ve located an Armadillo, there are two ways to collect its Scutes:

1. Passive Collection (Wait and Watch)

Similar to how chickens lay eggs, Armadillos naturally drop one Scute every 5 to 10 minutes. This method requires no tools or effort—just patience. While it’s resource-free, it can be time-consuming, especially if you're outfitting multiple wolves with armor.

2. Active Collection (Using a Brush)

The faster and more reliable method is brushing the Armadillo with a Brush tool. Each use yields one Scute and doesn’t harm the mob, making it an ethical and efficient option.

  • In Java Edition, a single unenchanted Brush can be used four times on Armadillos before breaking.
  • In Bedrock Edition, the same Brush lasts five uses.
  • Damaged Brushes can be repaired by combining two in a crafting grid.
  • Using an Anvil, enchanted Brushes can be merged to preserve both durability and enchantments.

Available Enchantments for Brushes:

  • Unbreaking
  • Mending
  • Curse of Vanishing

How to Craft a Brush

To craft a Brush, arrange the following materials in the center column of the Crafting Table:

  • Top: Feather
  • Middle: Copper Ingot
  • Bottom: Stick

Once crafted, equip the Brush and interact with a stationary Armadillo by using the appropriate action button. Repeat the process across multiple Armadillos to gather Scutes efficiently.

Crafting Wolf Armor

Each full set of Wolf Armor requires six Armadillo Scutes. Once you’ve collected enough, open your Crafting Table and arrange the Scutes in the following pattern:

  • Top row: Scute, Scute, Scute
  • Middle row: Scute, Leather, Scute
  • Bottom row: Empty, Leather, Empty

This creates a durable suit of armor that can be equipped on your tamed wolf to boost its survivability in battle.

Whether you choose to wait for natural drops or actively brush multiple Armadillos, gathering Scutes is a rewarding process that enhances both gameplay and pet protection. With the right preparation, your wolf can become a well-armored companion ready for any adventure.
