During Nintendo's April Direct, the company unveiled all the exciting details about the Switch 2, sparking anticipation for preorders in the U.S. While the console's price was somewhat expected, the cost of first-party Switch 2 games at launch, particularly the $80 price tag for Mario Kart World, raised many eyebrows. Additionally, Nintendo is rolling out a new line of Switch 2 accessories, which have seen notable price increases over their original Switch counterparts, even since the initial announcement.
The Switch 2 Pro controller caught my attention, now priced at a hefty $85. As someone who already owns multiple Switch Pro controllers, the idea of purchasing another version is less than appealing. Fortunately, Nintendo confirmed in a developer interview that the original Switch Pro controller will be compatible with the Switch 2, offering some relief.
Not the Switch 2 version.

While some might opt for the newer Switch 2 Pro controller, it's not essential for most games. If you already own a Switch Pro controller, you can save your $80 for new games. For those planning to buy the Switch 2 but lacking a Pro controller, the standard Switch Pro controller remains a more affordable option at $69.99.
There's a chance these older controllers might sell out before the Switch 2 hits the market, making way for the new model. Amazon currently has a significant stock shortage, offering only third-party alternatives. Nintendo has also confirmed that the original Joy-Con controllers will be compatible with the Switch 2, though we typically recommend the Switch Pro controller over Joy-Con for most games.
If the Switch 2 Pro controller is the accessory you're eager to get, you'll need to wait until the console's launch. The new controller will be available starting June 5, alongside the Switch 2. Preorders for the new console, and likely the official accessories, will begin on April 24. Keep in mind, the Switch 2 Pro controller is only compatible with the Switch 2 and won't work with the original Switch.
Listings for the Switch 2 Pro controller are already popping up at Walmart and Best Buy, though without a specific preorder date. Walmart also features listings for Switch 2 games that you'll be able to preorder soon.
