Marvel Comics is set to relaunch its monthly Captain America series, introducing a fresh creative team and a new storyline that delves into Steve Rogers' initial experiences after emerging from suspended animation. This exciting new series will even feature the very first encounter between Captain America and Doctor Doom, adding a thrilling dimension to the narrative.
The announcement came during the ComicsPro retailer convention, where it was revealed that the series will be penned by Chip Zdarsky, known for his work on Batman and Daredevil, and illustrated by Valerio Schiti, who has worked on G.O.D.S. and The Avengers. The talented Frank D'Armata will handle the colors. Notably, Zdarsky, Schiti, and D'Armata previously collaborated on the 2017 Marvel 2-in-One, promising a seamless and dynamic visual storytelling experience.

The new series kicks off shortly after Steve Rogers is discovered and revived in the modern Marvel era. Upon reenlisting in the US Army, Captain America's first mission involves teaming up with the Howling Commandos to infiltrate Latveria, which has recently been taken over by a young and ambitious Doctor Doom. Although the series will eventually transition to the present-day Marvel setting, the events of this initial story arc will have lasting impacts on the ongoing narrative crafted by Zdarsky and Schiti.
“I’ve been a massive Captain America fan for decades. Writing the grizzled, older Cap in Avengers: Twilight was a joy, so getting to helm the actual Captain America title feels like a dream come true!” Zdarsky exclaimed in a statement. “We’re exploring Cap’s early days in the modern era with a twist that I think will truly surprise and engage readers! I’m thrilled to bring this story to life, especially with Valerio and Frank’s incredible artwork!”
Zdarsky further elaborated, “I’m approaching this series in the same way I did my run on Daredevil, focusing on getting into Cap’s head and presenting a grounded, human perspective on who he is in this new world. Steve Rogers embodies the best of us, and I want that to shine through on every page.”
“Captain America is one of my all-time favorite characters,” Schiti shared. “Reuniting with Chip Zdarsky and Frank D'Armata after our amazing collaboration on Marvel 2-In-One is a delight, and working on a story that balances heart, action, and entertainment is incredibly rewarding. What’s most exciting and unexpected is how I’ve found myself focusing more on Steve Rogers, the man, rather than just Captain America, the hero.”
Schiti added, “Chip’s script is so clever and compelling that I’m confident readers will be drawn into Steve's heart and soul. He’s a man who became the living embodiment of truth, justice, and freedom. He fought in a war against Nazism, ‘died’ in that war, and then returned to life to continue his duty and fight again. Considering he’s only in his late twenties during the period we’re exploring, that’s a lot of pressure!”
Captain America #1 is set to be released on July 2, 2025, promising fans an unforgettable journey into the early days of Steve Rogers in the modern world.
