Corinne Busche, the director of Dragon Age: The Veilguard, is reportedly set to leave EA-owned BioWare in the coming weeks, according to Eurogamer. Busche took on the role of game director in February 2022 and led the project to its launch in October of the previous year. IGN has reached out to EA for a statement on this matter.
Since its release, there has been ongoing discussion about the success of Dragon Age: The Veilguard. Eurogamer notes that while Busche is departing, the studio itself is not undergoing any other significant changes. Busche joined BioWare in 2019 after working at Maxis on various The Sims projects. Her leadership was crucial in steering Dragon Age: The Veilguard to completion, especially during the final years of its development, which spanned nearly a decade and included a major shift from a multiplayer concept to a full single-player RPG.
Eurogamer also reports that Busche's departure is not linked to the commercial performance of Dragon Age: The Veilguard. EA has not yet disclosed whether the game's sales and revenue met or exceeded expectations, but the company is set to release its Q3 2025 financial results on February 4.
BioWare has confirmed that there are no plans for Dragon Age: The Veilguard DLC, as the studio shifts its focus to Mass Effect 5, which has been teased but not fully revealed yet.
In August 2023, BioWare laid off around 50 employees, including veteran narrative designer Mary Kirby, who had been with the company since the inception of Dragon Age. These layoffs were part of a broader internal restructuring at EA, which saw the company split into sports and non-sports divisions. Rumors at the time suggested BioWare might be acquired, and Star Wars: The Old Republic was transitioned to a third-party to allow BioWare to concentrate on Mass Effect and Dragon Age.
The journey of Dragon Age: The Veilguard has been tumultuous, with the initial reveal in 2024 receiving negative feedback. This led to a quick follow-up with an early gameplay tease to address fan concerns. The name change from Dreadwolf to The Veilguard also faced criticism, though subsequent impressions of the game were generally positive.
With Busche's departure and the studio's focus shifting, fans of Dragon Age are left pondering whether BioWare will have the opportunity to develop another sequel in the series.
