FromSoftware has recently unveiled additional details about their newly announced exclusive for the Switch 2, titled The Duskbloods. This collaboration with Nintendo has not only influenced the game's style but also transformed the design of the keeper in the hub area into something unique and, surprisingly, cute.
The trailer showcased during the Switch 2 Direct this week concluded with a captivating shot of a winged rat character adorned with glowing glyphs, directly engaging the audience. This character, as it turns out, serves as the new hub companion for The Duskbloods.
"That character shares a similar role with the fire keepers from the Dark Souls series. They remain in the hub area, providing the player with advice and guidance," explained director Hidetaka Miyazaki in an interview with Nintendo.
"I suppose you could say we tried doing something a little Nintendo-esque in the spirit of the partnership," Miyazaki added. When pressed on what he meant by "Nintendo-esque," he elaborated, "We tried something cute for a change. Although I will say this character is actually an elderly gentleman (laughter)."
FromSoftware's shrine keepers have always been pivotal in guiding players through their challenging worlds. Iconic figures such as Melina, the Maiden in Black, and the Doll have become familiar touchstones for players, often providing crucial power-ups and direction.
In The Duskbloods, a PvPvE game, the role of the winged rat companion remains intriguing. Miyazaki hinted that FromSoft has introduced "a lot of new and interesting ideas," suggesting players should brace for surprises when the game launches on Nintendo Switch 2 in 2026.
