A Terminally Ill Gamer's Wish: Early Access to Borderlands 4
Gearbox CEO Randy Pitchford has pledged to fulfill the heartfelt request of Caleb McAlpine, a 37-year-old Borderlands fan battling terminal cancer, to experience the upcoming Borderlands 4 ahead of its official launch.
Caleb, diagnosed with stage 4 cancer in August, expressed his desire to play Borderlands 4 before his passing via a Reddit post. His plea resonated deeply, reaching Gearbox CEO Randy Pitchford, who responded on Twitter (X) with a commitment to make it happen. Pitchford stated they are actively working to "do whatever we can to make something happen," and subsequent communication via email has confirmed their efforts.
Revealed at Gamescom Opening Night Live 2024, Borderlands 4 is slated for a 2025 release. However, this timeframe presents a significant challenge for Caleb, whose prognosis estimates a remaining life expectancy of 7 to 12 months, possibly extending to two years with successful chemotherapy.
Despite his difficult circumstances, Caleb maintains a positive outlook, drawing strength from his faith. A GoFundMe campaign established to assist with medical expenses and related costs has already garnered significant support, nearing its $9,000 goal.
This isn't the first time Gearbox has demonstrated its compassion for its community. In 2019, they provided an early copy of Borderlands 3 to Trevor Eastman, another fan facing a terminal illness. Sadly, Eastman passed away later that year, but his memory lives on through the in-game legendary weapon, the Trevonator, named in his honor.
Furthermore, in 2011, Gearbox honored the memory of Michael Mamaril, a deceased fan, by creating an NPC in Borderlands 2 named after him, offering unique rewards to players.
While Borderlands 4's release date remains some time away, Gearbox's commitment to fulfilling Caleb's wish underscores their dedication to their fans. The company has expressed ambitious goals for the game, promising improvements and exciting new features. Until further details emerge, fans can add Borderlands 4 to their Steam wishlists and stay updated on release information.
