But beyond the engaging gameplay, Grimguard Tactics boasts a meticulously crafted lore.
The Lore of Terenos
The game's world, Terenos, is steeped in a rich history. A century before the game's events, Terenos enjoyed a golden age of prosperity and peace, only to be shattered by a cataclysmic event triggered by an evil force, a murder, and the descent of the gods into madness. A band of heroes' valiant attempt to defeat this evil force ended in betrayal and defeat, ushering in an era of darkness, suspicion, and conflict known as the Cataclysm.
The Cataclysm's legacy persists in the form of monstrous creatures and pervasive societal distrust. The true danger, however, lies not just in the monsters, but in the deep-seated hostility among humanity itself.
The World of Terenos
Terenos comprises five distinct continents: the mountainous Vordlands (resembling Central Europe), the maritime Siborni (evoking medieval Italy), the frigid and clan-ridden Urklund, the vast and ancient Hanchura (similar to China), and the diverse Cartha, a land of deserts, jungles, and magic. The player begins their journey in a Holdfast nestled in the Vordlands, the last bastion of hope against the encroaching darkness.
A Glimpse into the Heroes
Each of Grimguard Tactics' 21 hero types possesses a richly detailed backstory. For instance, the Mercenary, initially a sword-for-hire for King Viktor, became disillusioned after a mission involving the slaughter of innocent Woodfae. This moral conflict led him on a path of mercenary work, driven solely by self-interest, highlighting the complex moral landscape of Terenos. All heroes feature similarly compelling narratives.
