Gearbox's Plans for Borderlands 4: No Open World

Gearbox Software co-founder Randy Pitchford has explicitly stated that he would not label Borderlands 4 as an "open world." He mentioned that the term carries connotations that do not align with the game's design. While Pitchford did not detail how Borderlands 4 differs from traditional open-world games, he emphasized a clear distinction between guided gameplay segments and moments of unrestricted exploration.

Despite this, Borderlands 4 is poised to be the most ambitious entry in the series yet.
