Exciting news for handheld PC gaming enthusiasts: the Lenovo Legion Go S, running on SteamOS, is now available for preorder at Best Buy. This marks the first time a device other than Valve's Steam Deck will ship with SteamOS, a Linux-based operating system designed for gaming. The Lenovo Legion Go S with SteamOS is set to launch on May 25, starting at an affordable $549.99. Let's explore the specifics.

  • 120Hz gaming handheld with AMD Ryzen Z1 Extreme, 32GB RAM, and a 1TB SSD.

The SteamOS-powered Lenovo Legion Go S comes in two configurations. The first features an AMD Ryzen Z2 Go chip, 16GB of RAM, and a 512GB SSD, priced at $549.99, matching the cost of the 512GB OLED Steam Deck. The second, more powerful model, includes an AMD Ryzen Z1 Extreme chip, 32GB of RAM, and a 1TB SSD, available for $749.99.

Regardless of which model you select, you'll enjoy a 120Hz gaming handheld equipped with two USB-C ports. You can easily expand storage with a microSD card and benefit from trigger locks for hair triggers, a feature that's particularly useful in competitive shooters like Marvel Rivals.

Both configurations boast more powerful chips than the Steam Deck, suggesting they should be capable of running recent games that may be challenging for the Deck. Titles such as Indiana Jones and the Great Circle, Star Wars Outlaws, Dragon's Dogma 2, and Monster Hunter Wilds could be within reach.

It's important not to confuse these SteamOS-based Legion Go S models with the earlier Windows 11-based Legion Go S, released earlier this year. For more insights, check out our Lenovo Legion Go S review, which explains why you might want to steer clear of the Windows model (though it's still available at Best Buy for $729.99 if you're interested).

Valve has also announced plans to make SteamOS available for other non-Steam Deck handhelds soon. This means you'll soon have the option to install SteamOS on virtually any handheld gaming PC, potentially coinciding with the launch of these SteamOS-based Legion Go S models. If you're seeking a device that runs SteamOS and is more powerful than the Steam Deck, the Lenovo Legion Go S should be at the top of your list.
