Marvel Snap, developed by California-based Second Dinner and published by ByteDance subsidiary Nuverse, faced an unexpected ban in certain regions. This resulted in the game's removal from iOS and Android app stores on January 18, 2025, alongside other ByteDance apps like CapCut and Lemon8.
While many players experienced frustrating authorization problems, the game remains accessible on Steam for PC users. Second Dinner expressed surprise at the ban and assured players via an official Platform X statement that they are actively working to reinstate the game: “Marvel Snap is here to stay. We're working hard to restore the game as quickly as possible, and we'll keep players informed of our progress.”
The abrupt nature of the ban, without prior warning, caused significant frustration, particularly for players who continued making in-app purchases unaware of the impending lockout.
Interestingly, the ban's impact on other ByteDance apps was inconsistent. While Marvel Snap was affected, other titles such as Ragnarok X: 3rd Anniversary and Earth: Revival - Deep Underground remain playable.
Prior to the ban, we discussed the recent addition of the Moonstone card to Marvel Snap. Moonstone, a 4/6 cost Ongoing card, offers a potentially game-changing mechanic by copying the Ongoing effects of 1, 2, and 3-cost cards in her lane. This ability, combined with the existing pool of low-cost Ongoing cards (like Ant-Man and U.S. Agent), allows for rapid power generation and a significant strategic advantage. Unlike many inexpensive Ongoing cards that focus solely on power generation, Moonstone's unique ability to acquire these effects cost-free makes her a powerful addition to the game.
