Mojang Teases Major Copper Feature, Fans Hint Mob Return

Minecraft's official social media accounts have been dropping cryptic hints about a major copper-themed addition on the horizon.

The Minecraft X/Twitter account posted a playful message saying "C U in the mines!", while their Instagram showed a cave interior with blocks arranged to spell "CU 29" alongside the coordinates: "Teleported Steve to 29, 11, 63.54."

What's the significance? Cu is the chemical symbol for copper, 29 is its atomic number, 11 represents its group on the periodic table, and 63.54 is its atomic mass. This clearly points to copper being involved. Beyond that, the community has a strong theory about what's coming.

Copper has been part of Minecraft for years as one of the mineable ores that can be smelted into blocks, ingots, stairs, doors, and other items. The game even includes different weathered and oxidized variants, allowing for diverse building possibilities.

In 2021, Minecraft developer Mojang presented the copper golem concept as one of several potential new mobs during that year's Minecraft Live event. Unfortunately, it didn't win the community vote, and the idea was put on hold.

Despite not making the cut, the copper golem has remained a beloved concept among fans, appearing as Easter eggs in later Mob Votes. This helpful creature would have functioned similarly to other golems, with the unique ability to randomly activate copper buttons.

An interesting planned mechanic involved the golem gradually oxidizing over time, eventually turning into a statue unless players used an axe to remove the oxidation or if it was struck by lightning.

"What major copper-related feature has Mojang teased before?" one fan eagerly asked on Reddit. Another commented, "It seems obvious we're getting a copper update, and I believe it will include the introduction of copper golems."

The strongest indication of the copper golem's potential return comes from another official tease on the Minecraft YouTube channel. The video shows game director Agnes Larsson visiting a real mine after a Minecraft session. As Reddit users noted, the brief gameplay clip at the start features a house unmistakably shaped like a copper golem and constructed from copper blocks.

Is the copper golem finally going to get its time to shine? Possibly. Both teasers also emphasize underground settings, where copper ore naturally generates. While the exact nature of Mojang's plans remains unclear, players will need to stay tuned for official announcements.

Last month, Minecraft received a significant visual upgrade through the Vibrant Visuals update, though it's only available on supported platforms.
