New Mini Controller Enables Portrait Mode Gaming!

If you're a gamer, you've likely experienced the frustration of playing vertical arcade games on your phone in portrait mode. It often feels clunky and uncomfortable, right? Well, a modder named Max Kern has devised an innovative solution with his new Tate mode mini controller, but the big question remains: does it truly address the issue?

Traditional controllers are designed for landscape mode, much like those used with the Switch or Steam Deck. Yet, many classic vertical shooters and retro games require you to hold your phone in portrait mode, akin to scrolling through Instagram. Recognizing this, Max Kern crafted a compact USB-C gamepad tailored specifically for portrait-mode gaming, or Tate mode. This tiny controller connects directly to your phone’s USB-C port, eliminating the need for Bluetooth, charging, or extra batteries.

Max ingeniously used a Raspberry Pi RP2040 chip for the controller and 3D-printed the case and buttons with the help of JLCPCB. If you're interested in building your own, Max has provided a detailed tutorial on his YouTube channel.

What’s Your Opinion on This Tate Mode Mini Controller?

The controller leverages the GP2040-CE firmware, functioning as a standard HID controller compatible with Android, iOS, Windows, and Mac, showcasing its impressive versatility despite its small size.

However, there are concerns about the strain it might place on the USB-C port. Since the gamepad partially supports the phone's weight, you'll need to hold both securely to avoid potential damage to the connector over time.

Reactions on Reddit vary, with some expressing admiration for the ingenuity while others worry about potential hand cramps and discomfort. It's worth noting that this isn't a commercial product but rather a DIY project. Max has generously shared all the necessary firmware and print files on Thingiverse and GitHub, making it accessible for enthusiasts to try at home.
