The recent crossover between Shift Up's *Goddess of Victory: NIKKE* and *Neon Genesis Evangelion* in August 2024 didn't meet player expectations. In a candid interview, Nikke's producer shed light on what went wrong with the Nikke x Evangelion collaboration.
Shift Up identified several issues with the Evangelion collaboration event. The event introduced characters like Rei, Asuka, Mari, and Misato in outfits that closely mirrored their original designs. However, these outfits didn't excite players as much as anticipated.
Initially, Shift Up's design team crafted Evangelion characters with a more provocative style, which didn't sit well with Evangelion's creators. Consequently, the designs were toned down to meet the licensors' standards. While this adjustment satisfied the licensors, it left players feeling underwhelmed by the modified aesthetics.
Beyond the outfits, players felt that the collaboration lacked compelling incentives to invest in limited-time characters and costumes. The high-priced gacha skin for Asuka, for instance, was too similar to her base model, failing to entice players.
Fans of *Goddess of Victory: NIKKE* appreciate the game for its bold, over-the-top anime girls and engaging storytelling. Recent collaborations, including the Evangelion event, have diluted the game's unique identity, leading players to question the value of participating in such events.
Despite Nikke's solid foundation, the uninspired designs and the stretched-out feel of the Evangelion event left much to be desired. Shift Up has acknowledged the feedback and promises to consider it for future events, raising hopes for improved content in the coming months.
