The Nintendo Switch 2 has officially been unveiled, and with it comes a host of exciting new features that promise to enhance your gaming experience. One of the standout features is the introduction of new Joy-Cons, which now include optical sensors that can function as a mouse. This innovative addition offers a new way to interact with your games. However, there's another significant upgrade that might have slipped under the radar during the initial reveal: the Nintendo Switch 2 now boasts not one, but two USB-C ports.
This upgrade from the single USB-C port on the original Nintendo Switch is more impactful than it might initially seem. With the original model, using multiple accessories simultaneously often required purchasing additional, sometimes unreliable, adapters. These adapters could potentially cause issues, including the risk of bricking your console, as manufacturers tried to reverse-engineer Nintendo's unique USB-C specification.
The original Switch's USB-C port, while claimed to be compliant, actually used a custom specification that was complex and challenging for third-party accessory makers to work with. This led to delays and potential damage to the console as companies figured out the correct specifications.
With the addition of a second USB-C port on the Nintendo Switch 2, there is a strong expectation that the console will adhere to standard USB-C protocols this time. Given the advancements in USB-C technology since 2017, including the high-end Thunderbolt standard, these ports can now support high-speed data transfers, 4K display outputs, and even the connection of external GPUs to smaller devices like PCs or laptops.

The evolution of USB-C standards means they are now more comprehensive and refined. The inclusion of a second port on the Switch 2 suggests that Nintendo is embracing these standards, enabling a range of connections such as external displays, networking, data transfers, and high-wattage power.
The lower port is likely to be more advanced, as it will be primarily used with Nintendo's official dock, where you would connect most of your accessories. Ideally, the top port should also support fast charging, display outputs, and other accessories. Including a secondary USB-C port without these capabilities would not make sense. This enhancement significantly improves the quality of life for users, allowing the simultaneous use of external power banks and other accessories, a major step up from the original console's capabilities.
For more details on the Nintendo Switch 2, including the mysterious C button, we'll have to wait until April 2, 2025, when Nintendo hosts its Switch 2 Direct presentation.
