Nintendo Switch 2 Image Reveals C Button on Joy-Con

Nintendo has officially confirmed that the mysterious new button on the Nintendo Switch 2's Joy-Con is indeed the C button, putting an end to the swirling rumors. This confirmation came through the recently launched Nintendo Today! app, whose listings on the App Store and Google Play include an image that, upon close inspection, clearly reveals the letter "C" on the button.

The new button was first unveiled alongside the Nintendo Switch 2 earlier this year, but initial images of the Joy-Con did not feature any letter on the button. However, prior reports had already hinted at it being called the "C" button, which has now been validated.

Speculation abounds regarding the purpose of the C button. Some enthusiasts believe it might be related to "casting" the Switch 2 to a TV wirelessly or facilitating some form of screen sharing. Others speculate that it could toggle the Joy-Con's functionality, such as switching to a mouse mode. There's also talk about it possibly being linked to new group or voice chat features.

PlayNintendo has announced a Switch 2 Direct for April 2, so we're hopeful for more details then. In the meantime, here's what we know for sure:

  • Nintendo Switch 2 is set to launch in 2025, likely not before June, based on the hands-on event schedule.
  • The Nintendo Switch 2 is larger than its predecessor, featuring larger Joy-Con controllers that appear capable of functioning as a mouse.
  • It comes equipped with two USB-C ports, one at the top and one at the bottom, unlike the original Switch which had only one.
  • The Nintendo Switch 2 is backward compatible, with the reveal video confirming compatibility with both physical and digital Nintendo Switch games, as well as Switch 2 exclusive titles. However, certain Nintendo Switch games might not be fully compatible.
  • A new Mario Kart game is in development for the Nintendo Switch 2.

Meanwhile, Nintendo recently hosted a Direct focused on the original Switch, where they also announced the Nintendo Today! app. Video game legend Shigeru Miyamoto revealed the app as a surprise during the showcase. This all-in-one phone application offers a variety of benefits for dedicated Nintendo fans.

The Nintendo Today! app acts as a comprehensive hub, serving as both a daily calendar and a news platform to deliver updates directly to players in real-time. Miyamoto highlighted that, following the Nintendo Switch 2 Direct next week, fans can log into the app to stay updated, with new information being released daily thereafter.
