The Nintendo Switch 2 Joy-Cons could potentially operate in a mode resembling a computer mouse, based on recent circumstantial evidence. While it remains uncertain whether this feature will be widely adopted by game developers, it aligns with Nintendo's history of innovative experimentation.
This intriguing possibility was brought to light by Famiboards user LiC, who has been analyzing Vietnamese customs data related to shipments from a company believed to be a Nintendo parts supplier. This data has been a rich source of information, fueling numerous Switch 2 rumors and speculation since mid-2024.
In early January 2025, LiC shared further insights on Famiboards, revealing that they had previously found references to a polyethylene (PE) plastic adhesive tape in customs manifests. This tape was described as intended for "game console handles" and labeled as "mouse soles," a term commonly associated with the bottom part of a computer mouse. The inclusion of mouse soles in potential Switch 2 parts lists suggests that the new console might incorporate mouse-like functionality.
LiC identified two model numbers for these mouse soles: LG7 and SML7. These designations do not appear in public component databases, indicating that they could be part of new, unreleased products. According to the data, both pieces of tape measure 90 x 90mm, which is large enough to cover the back of the new Joy-Cons based on previously leaked dimensions. However, their square shape might necessitate trimming during assembly, assuming the information is accurate.
Although a mouse-like controller mode is consistent with Nintendo's tradition of experimentation, this technology has already been implemented elsewhere. The Lenovo Legion GO, released in 2023, features a right controller that can function as a mouse when rotated into a joystick-like configuration. Lenovo even includes a circular piece of plastic to facilitate smoother movement on surfaces.
Additionally, the Lenovo Legion GO comes with magnetic rails for easy controller attachment, a feature rumored to be included in the Switch 2. The Legion GO could provide a preview of what to expect from Nintendo's next hybrid console.
