The official trailer for the Nintendo Switch 2 was released on January 16, 2025, taking the gaming world by surprise. Without any prior announcement, videos showcasing the new form factor of the console suddenly appeared on Nintendo's YouTube channels. From the video, it's evident that the Nintendo Switch 2 will be larger than its predecessor in every dimension. The screen, Joy-Cons, and even the control sticks have all been upsized. While exact specifications are yet to be officially disclosed, insiders suggest the Switch 2 will measure 116 mm in height, 270 mm in width, and 14 mm in thickness. This makes it 3.1 cm wider and 1.4 cm taller than the original Switch. Additionally, whispers hint at an 8-inch screen diagonal, compared to the 7-inch screen of the OLED version of the first Switch.

Design

The video presentation highlights a new design feature for the Joy-Cons—they are now magnetic and connect to the console via two recessed contacts in the body. If you're concerned about durability, rest assured that these contacts are well-protected by the console’s frame, making them nearly impossible to break. The SL and SR buttons, now larger and metallic, also contribute to the magnetic connection, ensuring the controllers stay firmly in place. However, this design choice results in bezels on the sides of the screen.

The video also shows the Joy-Cons "sliding" to the side after pressing a button, indicating a new holder design. The grips are now flat on top, and the Joy-Cons attach from the sides rather than the top. The buttons on the Joy-Cons are slightly larger, and rumors suggest the sticks will use Hall effect sensors to combat drift. Notably, the IR camera has been removed, potentially affecting backward compatibility for games like Ring Fit Adventure.

Additionally, the top bezel of the console features a microphone and a USB Type-C port, suggesting possible direct compatibility with wired joysticks and voice chat functionality in games. More details on this are expected soon.
