Steam Player Count Soars After Patch 8 Release

Baldur’s Gate 3 (BG3) has finally launched its highly anticipated final patch, marking the end of its remarkable journey. On April 15, 2025, Larian Studios released BG3’s Patch 8, the last major update for the beloved RPG. The finality of this update has sparked a significant increase in player engagement, propelling BG3's concurrent player count from around 60,000 to over 169,000. This surge has positioned the game just outside of Steam’s top 10 most played games.

Larian Studios CEO Swen Vincke celebrated this player surge on Twitter (X) on April 22, noting that the game's robust mod support allows them to shift focus towards their "next big thing." It's been confirmed that Larian Studios will be moving away from the Dungeons and Dragons (D&D) Universe to explore new creative ventures.

As a result, D&D's parent companies, Wizards of the Coast and Hasbro, will carry forward the Baldur’s Gate franchise without Larian Studios. They are currently in discussions with other studios to potentially develop Baldur’s Gate 4.

12 New Subclasses, Photo Mode, and More!

Patch 8, first announced in November 2024 via a Steam blog post, has been a long time coming. This final update introduces 12 new subclasses, a photo mode, cross-play capabilities, and much more. Larian Studios has provided a comprehensive breakdown of the patch’s contents on the BG3 website. This latest set of patch notes is notably more extensive than their November 2024 post, featuring a detailed list of bug fixes and combat balance adjustments that polish BG3 to perfection.

Larian Studios has poured their heart into enhancing BG3, as evidenced by the extensive updates and fixes included in this final version. Although this marks their last major patch, Larian remains committed to supporting the modding community, ensuring that BG3 continues to evolve.
