The Asus ROG Ally Z1 Extreme is a Windows 11 gaming handheld featuring AMD's powerful Zen 4 Z1 Extreme processor, 16GB of RAM, and a 512GB SSD. Its 7-inch display delivers crisp 1080p resolution at a smooth 120Hz refresh rate. Unlike the Steam Deck's Linux-based OS, the ROG Ally runs Windows 11, offering greater customization and easier access to non-Steam game platforms.
In our review, Robert Anderson noted: "The Asus ROG Ally delivers on its promise as the ultimate portable Xbox Game Pass machine. While it has some drawbacks like suboptimal battery life and absent Steam Deck-style touchpads, its stunning 1080p display and impressive specs make it a formidable Steam Deck alternative."
While newer handhelds outperform the ROG Ally, they come at premium prices. Asus' upgraded ROG Ally X features the same Z1 Extreme processor but adds a larger battery, more RAM, increased storage, and an additional USB Type-C port. However, its $800 price tag at Best Buy makes it $300 more expensive than the standard model.
The Lenovo Legion Go S Steam Edition (2025) represents another compelling option with superior specifications including doubled RAM and storage capacity, plus a larger 9-inch display. As the first third-party Steam-based handheld beyond Valve's offering, it currently retails for $830 at Best Buy - $330 more than the discounted ROG Ally.
