Remember Shawn Levy's upcoming Star Wars movie? Fans of the Deadpool & Wolverine director can breathe a sigh of relief—the film is still in the works. Jonathan Tropper, the writer behind the project, recently shared an encouraging update with Screen Rant, expressing his excitement and hinting at a sooner-than-expected release. "I am excited too," Tropper said. "I hope it's on the way sooner than you think."
Details about the film remain largely under wraps, but we do know it will take place after the events of The Rise of Skywalker. Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy has confirmed its timeline, stating in a February interview with Deadline, "That’s also in the future. It’s all post-[the first] nine. Shawn’s is a standalone Star Wars story that'll take place post-nine, maybe five or six years out." This makes Levy's project the first to delve into the post-Rise of Skywalker era.
Kennedy also mentioned that the film will hit theaters after 2026's The Mandalorian and Grogu. "I'm producing the Mandalorian movie right now, and I'm also producing Shawn Levy's movie, which is after that," she explained. Additionally, there's buzz that Ryan Gosling is set to star in the film, adding to the anticipation.
Tropper's optimistic words suggest that progress is being made on Levy's film. However, fans should prepare for a wait, as it's not expected to premiere until at least the last quarter of 2026, if not 2027.
Disney has been quiet on the Star Wars front since the release of the critically panned Star Wars: Episode IX - The Rise of Skywalker in 2019. Several planned films, including one from Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige and a trilogy from Game of Thrones showrunners D.B. Weiss and David Benioff, have been canceled. Additionally, a Star Wars movie slated for late 2026 was recently removed from Disney's calendar.

At the 2023 Star Wars Celebration, Lucasfilm unveiled three new feature films: a New Republic movie directed by Dave Filoni set in his Mando-verse, a Dawn of the Jedi film helmed by James Mangold, and a New Jedi Order feature directed by Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy, which will see Daisy Ridley reprise her role as Rey post-Rise of Skywalker.
The Obaid-Chinoy project has seen some changes, with screenwriter Steven Knight recently stepping away after succeeding Damon Lindelof and Justin Britt-Gibson. Despite these shifts, Rey remains a key focus for Disney's future Star Wars endeavors, as reported by THR.
Disney's Star Wars slate is packed with more than just these films. Late last year, it was announced that X-Men producer Simon Kinberg will write a new trilogy, distinct from the Skywalker Saga as initially rumored.
The next Star Wars content to grace our screens is Season 2 of Andor, set to premiere on Disney+ on April 22 with a triple premiere episode, promising an exciting continuation of the series.
