The Warhammer 40,000 community was rocked by the surprise announcement that development on Space Marine 3 had begun, just six months after the release of Space Marine 2. This news, shared by publisher Focus Entertainment and developer Saber Interactive in mid-March, sparked concerns about the future support for Space Marine 2.
In response to these concerns, both companies released a blog post to reassure fans. They emphasized their commitment to Space Marine 2, stating, “Mid-March, we announced that Space Marine 3 had begun development and we’re excited to see your enthusiasm, although we hear those of you who fear for Space Marine 2 and its future support. So let us set the record straight: Space Marine 3 does not mean the end of Space Marine 2's development. Far from it. No teams are shifting over, no one is abandoning the game, and our plans to bring more awesome content to Space Marine 2 remain.”
The blog post detailed the ongoing plans for Space Marine 2, which include the release of Patch 7 in mid-April and the introduction of a new class, new PvE operations, and new melee weapons in the coming months. The developers playfully teased, “Trust us, there are surprises even dataminers haven’t found out about :)” hinting at additional undisclosed content.
Space Marine 3 is still in the early stages of development, years away from release, and the announcement is seen as the beginning of a new project rather than a sign of neglect for Space Marine 2. The developers expressed their gratitude for the community's excitement and support, stating, “Many of you were very excited for this project and this makes us incredibly happy and motivated. Thank you for the unwavering support. That being said, we still have a lot to offer to the players with Space Marine 2.”
The big reveal for Space Marine 2 includes the introduction of a new class, with fans speculating it could be the Apothecary or the Librarian, the latter bringing warp-powered space magic into the game. Additionally, a new melee weapon is on the horizon, with fans hoping for the iconic axe from Secret Level’s Warhammer 40,000 animated episode, which has already been modded into the game by enthusiasts.
The decision to move forward with Space Marine 3 follows the success of Space Marine 2. In an interview with IGN following the launch of Space Marine 2, Saber Interactive Chief Creative Officer Tim Willits mentioned the potential for story DLC and hinted at ideas for Space Marine 3. He noted, “Our game director Dmitry Grigorenko, he has proposed some story ideas that could either be DLC or a sequel. Yes, yes, yes! There's so many different factions... there are other chapters, too, that are interesting...” This suggests that Space Marine 3 could explore new enemy factions and chapters, building on the strong foundation laid by its predecessor.
