Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine 2's PC release has sparked controversy due to the mandatory installation of Epic Online Services (EOS), even for Steam users who don't want crossplay.
EOS: A Crossplay Mandate
Epic Games clarified to Eurogamer that crossplay across all PC platforms is a requirement for multiplayer games on the Epic Games Store. This necessitates the inclusion of EOS in Space Marine 2, regardless of the player's platform or desire for crossplay functionality. While developers aren't forced to use EOS, it's presented as the easiest solution for enabling crossplay on the Epic Games Store, and it's free to use.
Focus Entertainment, the publisher, stated that linking Steam and Epic accounts isn't required to play the game, but the EOS integration remains.
Player Backlash
The mandatory EOS installation has led to negative Steam reviews, fueled by concerns about perceived "spyware" and a desire to avoid the Epic Games launcher. The extensive EOS EULA, and its implications for data collection (region-specific), further intensified the negative response.
However, it's important to note that many games utilize EOS, including titles like Hades, Elden Ring, and Hogwarts Legacy. This is partly due to the prevalence of Unreal Engine, owned by Epic Games, which often integrates EOS.
The EOS Dilemma
Players can uninstall EOS after installation, but this disables crossplay functionality. The decision ultimately rests with the individual player, weighing the convenience of crossplay against concerns about EOS.
Despite the negative reception regarding EOS, Space Marine 2 has received positive critical acclaim, with Game8 awarding it a 92, praising its gameplay and faithfulness to the Warhammer 40,000 universe. A full review is available for a more detailed assessment.
