Scheduled for release on September 26, Marvel’s Spider-Man marks the second fully draftable, Standard-legal set in Magic’s Universes Beyond line, following the Final Fantasy set and the Modern-legal Lord of the Rings set from 2023. Unlike what you might expect, this set will not feature preconstructed Commander decks. Instead, **the cards in the Scene Box shown above** are specifically designed for Commander and **won't** be Standard-legal.
While Magic's first foray into the Marvel universe was through a Secret Lair featuring Wolverine, Captain America, and others last year, Spider-Man represents the first full set inspired by the comics. Wizards of the Coast Executive Producer Max McCall explains that a smaller product wouldn't do justice to the expansive world of Spider-Man. "Spider-Man needs a full set to do justice to the character and incorporate the many villains he’s come across over the years," McCall states. "Including characters from the Spider-Man canon in a wider set would leave too many characters out. We might have included Gwen Stacy and Miles Morales in a non-Spider-Man set, but there wouldn't be room for Aunt May."
McCall emphasizes that designing for a Universes Beyond set "flips the worldbuilding on its head." Unlike a typical Magic set where cards establish the location and setting, Universes Beyond sets leverage existing character familiarity. "When we create a card that embodies the concept of great power bearing great responsibility, we can add mechanical complexity because fans already understand the story," McCall adds. "We don't need to simplify Universes Beyond cards; we just need to focus on recognizable moments that fans can easily grasp."
AnswerSee ResultsHead Designer Mark Rosewater discusses how they translate these moments into Magic's color pie, which is "robust enough to show heroism and villainy in all five colors." He explains that Spider-Man would typically be represented in white, blue, and green colors. "Spider-Man's obligation to use his power to help others is central to his white color identity. His origins from a scientific experiment, like being bitten by a radioactive spider, align him with blue. Finally, his powers being animal-based and his destiny tied to spiders and the Spider-Man universe are core to green."
"We're not limiting ourselves to any one \[comic\] run or series." In addition to the Scene Box, the set will include Play Boosters, Collector Boosters, Bundles, and Prerelease Packs, all showcased in the gallery above. While there won't be preconstructed Commander decks, the set will bring back Welcome Decks—introductory decks designed for new players, often distributed for free by game stores to facilitate a gentle introduction to the game.
Alongside this year's Final Fantasy set, Wizards of the Coast has also announced a set themed around Avatar: The Last Airbender. Before that, fans can look forward to two more in-universe sets: Tarkir: Dragontsorm and the space-themed Edge of Eternities.
