Creating Suikoden 1 and 2 HD Remaster took five years because the developers were dedicated to crafting a faithful, high-quality remaster. In a March 4, 2025 interview with Dengeki Online, the team behind Suikoden I & II HD Remaster detailed their approach to recreating the classic titles.

Originally announced in 2022 with a planned 2023 release, the game was delayed and is now scheduled to launch this year. Takahiro Sakiyama, the IP and Game Director for the Gensho Suikoden series, explained that during final development and debugging, the team recognized the need for further refinements, leading to the postponement.

Game Director Tatsuya Ogushi added, “We began by carefully assessing the situation. After discussions with Sakiyama about quality targets, it became evident that numerous elements still needed attention, and we had to address them thoroughly.”

A New Beginning for the Franchise

The remaster represents more than a standalone release—it marks the first phase in revitalizing the Suikoden franchise. Series Producer Rui Naito shared their long-term vision for the series and potential future projects.

Naito emphasized to the production team, “This is the first step in bringing the Suikoden IP back to life, so we couldn’t afford to falter here. ‘Make it solid’ was the guiding principle.” He continued, “For Suikoden I & II HDR, I instructed Sakiyama and the team to create something robust, because if we released something incomplete at this crucial stage, the series revival could stall entirely.”

During the Gensou Suikoden Live event on March 4, 2025, Konami announced several upcoming Suikoden projects. Naito described the event as the second step in reviving the IP, though the total number of steps required remains uncertain.

He explained, “That’s why we’ve been refining Suikoden I & II HDR and maintaining a strong focus on the upcoming mobile game Suikoden STAR LEAP and the Suikoden II anime. Once we successfully deliver these projects, we can start planning the next phase.”

Konami also revealed Suikoden: The Anime, an adaptation based on the story of Suikoden II. This marks the first production by Konami Animation. Additionally, a mobile game titled “Genso Suikoden: STAR LEAP” is in development. Teaser trailers for both projects have been released, though no launch dates have been confirmed.

Konami is preparing more projects and events to reestablish the Suikoden IP as a beloved franchise in the gaming world.
