"Switch 2 Fans May Be Disappointed by Next Pokemon Event"

Summary

  • No news on Switch 2 Pokemon titles is expected at the upcoming Pokemon Presents on February 27.
  • Leaks suggest a forthcoming Switch 2 reveal, but Pokemon games will likely remain exclusive to the original console for now.
  • The next Pokemon Presents is anticipated to focus on Pokemon Legends: Z-A.

Pokemon enthusiasts eager for updates on Switch 2 Pokemon titles might find themselves disappointed at the upcoming Pokemon Presents, scheduled for Thursday, February 27. Since the franchise's debut on the original Game Boy in the 90s, Pokemon has been a staple on Nintendo platforms. However, fans may need to wait longer for the beloved series to make its way to the Switch 2.

As of now, Nintendo has not officially unveiled the Switch 2. The company has only confirmed that the next-generation console will be backward compatible with the original Switch, will transfer Nintendo accounts from the previous console, and is slated for a reveal within this fiscal year. Information about the Switch 2 mainly comes from leaks, which suggest it will be a more powerful, larger version of the original Switch.

While new Pokemon games will eventually come to the Switch 2, those hoping for news during the next Pokemon Presents should temper their expectations. Jeff Grubb has indicated that the event will showcase Pokemon games developed for the original Switch, which will be playable on the Switch 2 due to its backward compatibility.

Pokemon Presents Not Expected to Have News on Switch 2 Games

The upcoming Pokemon Presents is expected to offer updates on ongoing live-service Pokemon games such as Pokemon GO and Pokemon Trading Card Game Pocket. Additionally, fans are eagerly awaiting more information on Pokemon Legends: Z-A, set to launch for the original Switch later this year. So far, a brief teaser trailer has revealed Lumiose City as the setting, the return of some Pokemon, and the comeback of Mega Evolutions, but further details remain scarce. There are also rumors of another main series Pokemon game slated for release this year, separate from Pokemon Legends: Z-A and the anticipated Generation 10 titles.

Speculation suggests this could be remakes of Pokemon Black and White or a new pair of Let's Go games, both expected to be released on the original Switch rather than the Switch 2, if the leaked information holds true. Consequently, the first major Pokemon titles exclusive to the Switch 2 might be the Generation 10 games.

Historically, the Pokemon franchise has favored older hardware with larger install bases. For instance, Pokemon Black 2 and White 2 were released for the original DS instead of the 3DS. It seems this pattern may continue. However, none of this has been officially confirmed, so fans should stay tuned to the Pokemon Presents on February 27 for the latest updates.
