Darktide Surges With Arbites Hype, $5 Helmet Draws Ire

Warhammer 40K: Darktide sees player surge with new Arbites class release

Warhammer 40,000: Darktide has experienced a significant player resurgence following its first new class addition, though monetization concerns persist - particularly after developer Fatshark introduced a $5 version of the Arbitrator's default helmet with an open visor.

Battle for Tertium Update Revamps Core Experience

The recent Battle for Tertium update launched alongside the new Adeptus Arbites DLC class, fundamentally restructuring the co-op FPS-melee hybrid's core progression system. The rework introduces a linear campaign progression with new cinematic debriefings and mission structure.

Fatshark states these changes aim to "better onboard new players while gradually unlocking previously level-gated features."

Play

The headline addition for veteran players is undoubtedly the Adeptus Arbites class, a $11.99 DLC that appears successful in re-engaging both loyal and lapsed players. Steam charts show Darktide hitting 43,000 concurrent players - its highest peak in over two years - with console player counts remaining undisclosed.

Fatshark's Product Marketing Manager Rodrigue Delrue confirmed the player surge to IGN: "We're seeing strong engagement across all platforms. While we can't share specific numbers, we're grateful for our active, passionate community."

Monetization Backlash Over Visor Helmets

Controversy emerged around premium cosmetics, specifically an $5 "visor-up" variant of the Arbitrator's default helmet - identical except for the lifted faceplate.

Community reactions have been overwhelmingly negative, with one popular Reddit thread (3k upvotes) declaring: "We've reached peak Fatshark greed." Players criticize what they see as charging for a simple cosmetic toggle rather than meaningful customization.

Delrue addressed these concerns: "Cosmetic pricing requires careful balance. As a live service, we need sustainable revenue to continue development while respecting player expectations about value."

Future Content Pipeline

With Darktide approaching its third anniversary, Delrue reaffirmed Fatshark's commitment to ongoing support: "We'll continue providing free updates and new classes, following our long-term support model shown with Vermintide."

Players can anticipate additional content and system improvements as the game evolves throughout 2024.
