James Gunn has officially announced development of a new Wonder Woman film, revealing that the project is "currently being written."

During an Entertainment Weekly interview promoting the upcoming Superman release, DC Studios co-head Gunn clarified that this new Wonder Woman movie exists separately from the previously announced Paradise Lost HBO Max series.

"We're actively developing Wonder Woman," Gunn confirmed. "The script is currently in progress."

The iconic Amazon warrior has faced challenges in recent media adaptations outside comic books. Gal Gadot's live-action film series concluded prematurely following the polarizing reception of Wonder Woman 1984. The character has notably never headlined an animated series, and her planned solo video game—announced in 2021—was ultimately canceled.

As IGN's Carlos Morales recently analyzed: "At the peak of MCU-DCEU competition in the late 2010s, the first Wonder Woman film stood as one of DC's clearest triumphs. The 2017 installment earned critical acclaim and grossed over $800 million worldwide. Following the divided reactions to Batman v Superman and Suicide Squad, Patty Jenkins' interpretation resonated with audiences unlike recent DC offerings... The 2020 sequel however proved disappointing, splitting critics and underperforming financially."

That sequel released simultaneously on HBO Max and in theaters during pandemic-era hesitancy about public screenings.

While a third installment entered development, the project eventually stalled, leaving Wonder Woman's cinematic future uncertain until Gunn's announcement. This news naturally raises questions about who might next portray the iconic heroine.

Superman premieres July 11 as the cornerstone of Gunn's DCU reboot, preceding Peacemaker Season 2's August 21, 2025 HBO Max debut. Supergirl arrives June 26, 2026, while the Lanterns series remains undated.

Other confirmed DCU projects include the September 11, 2026 Clayface film. The Authority film appears troubled, while Peacemaker spinoff Waller has experienced "development challenges." Gunn reports Booster Gold progresses steadily and Paradise Lost maintains slow but consistent momentum.
