Netflix has officially announced the end of its interactive fiction games under the Netflix Stories banner, marking the closure of a brief foray into narrative gaming. Despite a solid player base, the decision to cancel Netflix Stories might seem surprising at first glance. Let's dive into the reasons behind this move and what it means for fans of these unique gaming experiences.
The decision to pull the plug on Netflix Stories comes as part of a larger strategic pivot at Netflix Games. According to Variety, the company is now steering its focus towards mobile titles that include party games, children's games, mainstream releases, and more interactive experiences designed for TV play. This shift indicates a broader change in direction, aiming to cater to a wider audience and different gaming formats.
Despite the cancellation, Boss Fight Entertainment, the creative force behind the Netflix Stories series, will continue to collaborate with Netflix on other projects. One such upcoming title is Squid Game: Unleashed, which promises to bring a different flavor of gaming to the platform.
Even with its loyal following and consistent ranking among the top-played Netflix Games—currently sitting fourth in the Netflix Games top 10 carousel, which tracks playtime rather than downloads—the Netflix Stories series is indeed coming to an end. The final interactive title in this lineup will be Love Is Blind: NYC. After its release, no further Netflix Stories games will be developed.
Interestingly, the cancellation news broke just as the Netflix Stories app began teasing its next game, The Love Contract, slated for an April 8th release. This game, unlike its predecessors, was not based on any existing Netflix IP but offered an original romance story about an actress navigating a complex love triangle involving a Hollywood star and a billionaire, set against a backdrop of fame, scandal, and faux relationships. Unfortunately, The Love Contract has now been scrapped.
While no new Netflix Stories games will be created, existing titles such as Love Is Blind, Emily in Paris, Money Heist, Love Is Blind: Winter’s Kiss, Perfect Match, Sex Education, Selling Sunset, Sweet Magnolias, Virgin River, and The Perfect Couple will remain accessible to players. However, planned sequels, including those for Outer Banks and Ginny & Georgia, have been cancelled.
So, there you have it—the full story behind the cancellation of Netflix Stories. If you're a fan of Netflix shows and want to experience these interactive narratives, you can still find them on the Google Play Store.
