A curated selection of retro Game Boy Advance and Nintendo DS titles available on the Nintendo Switch eShop. While Nintendo Switch Online boasts a strong GBA library, this list focuses on titles independently released on the eShop. We've chosen ten favorites: four GBA and six DS games.

Kicking things off is the shoot 'em up, Steel Empire. Although the Genesis/Mega Drive original holds a slight edge in my opinion, this GBA version is a solid alternative. A worthwhile comparison piece, offering a streamlined experience. Steel Empire remains enjoyable regardless of platform, often appealing even to non-shooter fans.

While the Mega Man X console series faltered, the GBA saw the rise of a true Mega Man successor: Mega Man Zero. This marks the beginning of an excellent side-scrolling action series, albeit one with initial rough edges that were later refined. Start here, and feel free to explore the rest of the series.

A Mega Man double-feature! Mega Man Zero and Mega Man Battle Network offer distinct gameplay experiences, both exceptionally well-executed. Battle Network is an RPG with a unique battle system blending action and strategy. Its clever concept of a virtual world within electronic devices is fully realized. While later entries show diminishing returns, the original offers considerable fun.

The Castlevania Advance Collection is a must-have, but if forced to choose, Aria of Sorrow stands out. For me, it sometimes surpasses even the phenomenal Symphony of the Night. Its soul-collecting system encourages grinding, but the engaging gameplay makes it worthwhile. A unique setting and hidden secrets add to its appeal; a top-tier GBA title.

The original Shantae enjoyed cult status, but limited distribution hindered its reach. Shantae: Risky’s Revenge, released on DSiWare, propelled the Half-Genie Hero to greater fame. Its success ensured continued appearances across console generations. Interestingly, it's somewhat rooted in an unreleased GBA game, which is slated for release soon.

Arguably a GBA game (its origin), Ace Attorney blends investigations with dramatic courtroom scenes. The blend of humorous and compelling narratives is a winning formula. While later installments are strong, the original remains a standout.

From the Ace Attorney creator, Ghost Trick boasts equally strong writing and unique gameplay. As a ghost, you manipulate objects to save others while uncovering the mystery of your own death. A captivating and rewarding experience, deserving of more recognition.

A top-tier Nintendo DS title, best experienced on its original hardware. While ports exist, none fully capture the original's essence. However, the Switch version is a viable alternative for those without access to a DS.

The recently released Castlevania Dominus Collection includes all three Nintendo DS Castlevania games. Dawn of Sorrow benefits from improved button controls over its touch-based original. However, all three games in the collection are highly recommended.

A franchise that thrives on the DS/3DS systems. Atlus's Switch port is a commendable effort. Each Etrian Odyssey game is a substantial RPG; Etrian Odyssey III, being the largest, is a worthwhile investment despite its quirks.
