Hello fellow gamers, and welcome to the SwitchArcade Roundup for September 4th, 2024! Summer's warmth has faded, leaving behind memories both scorching and sweet. I'm feeling a bit wiser after our shared journey, and incredibly grateful for your company. As autumn arrives, I want to express my sincere thanks—you've been the best gaming companions anyone could ask for. Today's update is packed with game reviews, new releases, and some enticing sales! Let's dive in!
The Nintendo Switch has given us a second chance at many classic titles, and now the Ace Attorney Investigations Collection joins the ranks. This compilation brings us Miles Edgeworth's two adventures following Trials & Tribulations, finally offering official English localization for the previously untranslated game. The sequel cleverly builds upon the original's narrative, enhancing the overall experience in retrospect.
Shifting the perspective to the prosecution with Miles Edgeworth at the helm provides a fresh viewpoint. While the core mechanics remain largely unchanged—gathering clues, interrogating witnesses, and solving cases—the unique presentation and Edgeworth's character add a distinct flavor. The pacing differs slightly from the main Ace Attorney series, occasionally leading to lengthy cases, but fans of the franchise will undoubtedly appreciate this sub-series. If the first game feels slow, persevere—the second is significantly better, enriching the first game's narrative.
Bonus features are generous, reminiscent of the Apollo Justice collection. A gallery showcasing art and music, a story mode for relaxed playthroughs, and the option to switch between original and updated visuals/soundtracks are all included. The addition of a dialogue history is a welcome feature, addressing a common frustration in this genre.
The Ace Attorney Investigations Collection presents a compelling contrast between its two games. Taken together, it's a fantastic package, particularly given the long-awaited localization of the second game. With this release, nearly every Ace Attorney title (excluding the Professor Layton crossover) is now available on the Switch. If you've already enjoyed other entries, this is a must-have addition.
SwitchArcade Score: 4.5/5
A sequel to Gimmick! is a surprising development. Sunsoft's late NES title saw limited Western release, yet three decades later, we have a sequel. Developed by Bitwave Games, this faithful follow-up, while perhaps overly faithful for some, stays true to the original's spirit.
Six lengthy and demanding physics-based platforming levels await. The difficulty is immediately apparent, though an easier mode is now available. Yumetaro's star attack returns as a versatile tool for combat and puzzle-solving. Collectibles add replay value, unlocking customization options.
The game's length is moderate, but the challenge remains high. Frequent deaths are expected, but generous checkpoints mitigate frustration. The charming visuals and lively music help temper the difficulty. Gimmick! 2 retains the original's challenging spirit, demanding platforming skills and strategic use of Yumetaro's star and enemies.
Despite being developed by a different team, Gimmick! 2 is a successful sequel. It cleverly expands upon the original without losing its identity. Fans of the original and challenging platformers alike will find much to enjoy. However, those seeking a relaxed experience should be warned—it's as tough as its predecessor.

Valfaris: Mecha Therion takes a bold step, abandoning the original's action-platformer formula for a shoot 'em up experience reminiscent of Lords of Thunder. Surprisingly, it largely succeeds, though the Switch's limitations impact performance. Despite this, the intense action, excellent soundtrack, and creepy visuals remain enjoyable.
The game's weapon system adds a strategic layer. The main gun depletes energy, requiring use of the melee weapon to recharge it, while a third weapon provides additional options. Mastering the rhythm of weapon management and defensive maneuvers is crucial for survival.
While a departure from the first game, Valfaris: Mecha Therion maintains its distinctive atmosphere. It's a stylish heavy metal shoot 'em up that cleverly avoids common genre pitfalls. Performance is better on other platforms, but the Switch version is still a satisfying experience.
SwitchArcade Score: 4/5
Licensed games often cater primarily to fans, and Umamusume: Pretty Derby – Party Dash is no exception. It delivers ample fan service, with strong writing and meta-systems that reward dedicated fans. However, its appeal to non-fans is limited. The gameplay consists of a small selection of repetitive mini-games, and the narrative will resonate only with those familiar with the source material.
Even for fans, the game's focus feels misplaced. While the visuals, sound, and world are well-executed, and unlockables provide some incentive, the limited gameplay quickly becomes repetitive. Without prior attachment to Umamusume, the game's appeal is minimal.
SwitchArcade Score: 3/5
Sunsoft is known in the West for titles like Blaster Master, but this collection showcases a lesser-known side: charming 8-bit games popular in Japan. Sunsoft is Back! Retro Game Selection offers three such games: Firework Thrower Kantaro’s 53 Stations of the Tokaido, Ripple Island, and The Wing of Madoola. All three are fully localized and include save states, rewind, display options, and art galleries.
The games vary in quality. 53 Stations is frustrating due to its weapon mechanics, but possesses unique charm. Ripple Island is a solid adventure game, while The Wing of Madoola is ambitious but uneven. None are top-tier NES games, but none are outright bad.
This collection is a treat for Sunsoft fans and those who enjoy exploring lesser-known titles. The careful handling and localization of these previously untranslated games make this a valuable addition.
