Balatro Dev Reveals Personal Favorite Game of 2024

LocalThunk, the solo developer behind the hugely successful indie game Balatro (3.5 million copies sold!), has declared Animal Well his 2024 Game of the Year. This accolade, playfully dubbed the "Golden Thunk" award, highlights Animal Well's immersive gameplay, stylish design, and hidden secrets, praising its creator, Billy Basso of Shared Memory. Basso, in response, lauded LocalThunk as a humble and kind developer. This exchange showcases positive camaraderie within the indie game development community.

Balatro, a pixel art deck-building game, achieved critical acclaim and widespread player appreciation in 2024. However, LocalThunk’s admiration extends beyond his own creation. He also singled out several other indie titles as personal favorites, including:

  • Animal Well: Praised for its engaging experience, style, and hidden secrets.
  • Dungeons and Degenerate Gamblers: A fellow pixel art deck-building game, sharing similarities with Balatro.
  • Arco
  • Nova Drift
  • Ballionaire
  • Mouthwashing

LocalThunk's continued dedication to Balatro is evident in the three "Friends of Jimbo" updates released since its launch. These updates introduced crossover content from popular titles like Cyberpunk 2077, Among Us, and Dave the Diver, and he's hinted at another collaboration in the works. The success of Balatro hasn't stopped its creator from actively engaging with the community and improving the game.
