New Thor Fears in Avengers: Doomsday After Hemsworth Tribute

Marvel star Chris Hemsworth has shared a tribute video dedicated to Thor, leading to speculation that the character may meet his end in Avengers: Doomsday.

Titled “Thank You! The Legacy of Thor,” the compilation includes clips ranging from Hemsworth’s early audition tape all the way through his role in 2022’s Thor: Love and Thunder. Although it might simply be a nostalgic reflection on the character Hemsworth has portrayed since 2011—especially now that filming for Avengers: Doomsday is underway—many fans interpret it as a farewell tribute.

In the video description, Hemsworth wrote a note of gratitude:

“Portraying Thor has been one of the greatest honors of my life. For the past 15 years, I’ve wielded Mjolnir and later Stormbreaker as the God of Thunder, but what truly made it special… was sharing the journey with all of you. Your passion, cheers, and affection for this character have meant everything to me.

“Thank you for making my time in the Marvel Cinematic Universe unforgettable.. Next up, Doomsday!”

This heartfelt message, paired with the tribute video, has raised concerns among MCU fans that Chris Hemsworth may be preparing to retire from the role.

“Please never walk away from this role. We all want you to stay,” reads one comment on the video. “Please never stop playing Thor,” reads another.

Similar reactions are spreading across social media. “Oh yeah Thor’s definitely dying next movie,” one X/Twitter user wrote. “Ya he’s getting cooked,” added another.

This speculation is supported by relevant context. Last year, Hemsworth acknowledged that he “didn't stick the landing” with the polarizing Thor: Love and Thunder and expressed feeling he owed fans another film.

In an interview with Vanity Fair, Hemsworth admitted he leaned too heavily into improv and eccentric humor in Love and Thunder, which ultimately hurt the film—especially coming after Thor: Ragnarok, a breakout success that skillfully blended comedy with the character's epic tone.

“I got caught up in the improv and the wackiness, and I became a parody of myself,” he said. “I didn't stick the landing.” According to Vanity Fair, Hemsworth hasn’t forgiven himself for that performance, which is why he believes he owes the audience another movie. Could Avengers: Doomsday or Secret Wars serve as that film, or would a Thor 5 be a more fitting conclusion?

The likelihood of Thor 5 seemed low after Hemsworth—who has appeared in eight Marvel Cinematic Universe films—stated he’s ready to "close the book" on the character. In addition, director Taika Waititi, who helmed Ragnarok and Love and Thunder, has stepped away due to a busy schedule.

Marvel recently pushed back the release dates for Avengers: Doomsday and Avengers: Secret Wars to December 2026 and December 2027, respectively. The Fantastic Four: First Steps, Spider-Man: Brand New Day, and the two Avengers films are currently the only MCU projects with confirmed release dates.
