Sandfall Interactive has unveiled exciting new details about Clair Obscur: Expedition 33, including its release date, characters, and innovative gameplay mechanics. This eagerly awaited title was showcased during Xbox's Developer Direct, providing fans with a deeper look into what they can expect from this upcoming game.
Set against the backdrop of a fantasy world inspired by "Belle Epoque France," Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 is scheduled for release on April 24, 2025, as announced by Sandfall Interactive during Xbox's Developer Direct. The developers have meticulously crafted the game, reimagining classic turn-based combat to offer a fresh and engaging experience. Excitingly, the game will be available on day one with Xbox Game Pass.
Gamers can pre-order the base game for $44.99 or opt for the Deluxe Edition at $59.99 on the Xbox Store. For those on Steam and PS5, a 10% discount is available, setting the prices at $44.99 and $53.99, respectively. The game is currently only wishlistable on the Epic Games Store. The Steam discount will expire on May 2, 2025, while PlayStation's discount will end at the game’s release date at 3:00 PM (local time), requiring a PlayStation Plus subscription for the special pricing.
Alongside the release date, Sandfall Interactive provided comprehensive details about the game’s new characters and gameplay mechanics.
The game introduces a full cast of seven playable characters and one dedicated to exploration. Among the latest additions are Monoco and Esquie, mysterious and otherworldly beings joining the 33rd expedition. Monoco, described as a "friendly and bloodthirsty Gestral," thrives in combat and sees it as a form of meditation. This character can transform into defeated enemies, adding a dynamic layer to the combat system. Gestrals, notably, are immune to the Paintress’ influence, which adds an intriguing twist to the narrative.
Esquie, on the other hand, is a living legend, known as the oldest and strongest being in the world. Though less active in combat, Esquie plays a crucial role by granting access to various locations across the open world map. The team must collect his special stones to unlock new abilities and explore previously inaccessible areas.
The other playable characters, revealed earlier on October 16, 2024, via a YouTube video, include Gustave, Lune, Maelle, Sciel, Renoir, and Verso. Despite their diverse backgrounds and motivations, these characters have united with a common goal to end the cycle of death.
Sandfall Interactive has gone beyond aesthetics to revitalize the turn-based RPG combat system, as highlighted in an article from Xbox Wire on January 23, 2025. Guillaume Broche, the CEO and creative director, emphasized the game's depth, stating, "We didn’t want the game to just be a pretty face. We wanted it to be like a game that feels like a real game. So every character has their own playstyle and you can really play them in a lot of different ways – but they also feel very different from each other, and they all have their unique mechanics and their unique skill tree."
The game introduces a reactive turn-based system, blending real-time elements with traditional turn-based combat. Players can dodge attacks or parry to inflict significant damage, with the possibility to execute more powerful attacks by pressing specific buttons. The system includes adjustable difficulty settings to accommodate different player skill levels, ensuring everyone can enjoy the combat.
Character customization is another highlight, with each character boasting unique mechanics and skill trees. For example, Lune can accumulate "Stain" to enhance her abilities, while "Pictos" tied to equipment can evolve into permanent "Luminas" after four battles, offering passive effects. This deep customization allows players to experiment with hundreds of different builds, tailoring their gameplay to their preferred style.
With its innovative reactive turn-based system and extensive character customization, Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 promises to challenge players' strategic thinking and reflexes, all while offering a rich and immersive gaming experience.
