Deadpool's Final Marvel Massacre: Trilogy Concludes

2011's Deadpool Kills the Marvel Universe lived up to its explosive title, showcasing Wade Wilson's descent into chaotic mayhem as he slaughtered heroes and villains across the Marvel Universe. The series' popularity led to a sequel, 2017's Deadpool Kills the Marvel Universe Again, by writer Cullen Bunn and artist Dalibor Talajić. Now, the duo returns for the trilogy's finale: Deadpool Kills the Marvel Universe One Last Time. This time, the stakes are even higher—Wade's wrath isn't confined to a single universe; he's targeting the entire Marvel multiverse.

IGN recently spoke with Bunn to delve into this final chapter. Below is an exclusive preview of the first issue, followed by insights into the fourth-wall-breaking carnage to come.

Bunn, a prolific Deadpool writer (Deadpool: Killustrated, Night of the Living Deadpool, Deadpool & the Mercs for Money), revealed that the trilogy wasn't initially planned. "I never knew that series would go anywhere," he admitted. "My first pitch after completing the first Deadpool Kills the Marvel Universe was actually Deadpool Kills the Marvel Multiverse. Now is a much better time to tell that story!"

Escalating the conflict presented a challenge. Bunn's solution? The multiverse. This installment features battles against Cap-Wolves, Worldbreaker Hulks, and twisted versions of familiar heroes and villains.

"The multiverse opens up new avenues," Bunn explained. "We wanted this to be different. I spent a lot of time researching the 'worst' (meaning 'best') variants. What I didn't realize is we were creating the most epic Deadpool story of all time!"

While Bunn remains tight-lipped about specific matchups beyond those already revealed, he promises exciting encounters: "There are some cool characters showing up... dozens and dozens. Deadpool is battling some of the most powerful heroes and villains. Some characters haven't been seen in over 30 years!"

Talajić's artistic style, which incorporated shifting art styles in Deadpool Kills the Marvel Universe Again, continues to evolve in this finale. Bunn teases, "Dalibor is bringing some real insanity to the page!"

Unlike direct sequels, the first two Deadpool Kills books presented distinct scenarios for Deadpool's rampage. This third installment offers a fresh start, though observant readers might find connections to previous installments. Bunn emphasizes, "It's a fresh start... sort of. The story stands alone, but observant readers might pick up on interesting tidbits."

While previous iterations showed a degree of sympathy for Deadpool, Bunn suggests this version is even more relatable: "I think the Deadpool we see in this book is much more sympathetic... 'What if Deadpool killed the Marvel Universe... and we were rooting for him to succeed?'"
