A recent Destiny 2 update unintentionally wiped out a significant number of players' usernames due to a malfunction in the game's moderation system. This article details the developers' response and outlines steps players can take if affected.
Following a recent update, many Destiny 2 players discovered their Bungie Names had been inexplicably altered. Numerous players reported their names replaced with "Guardian" followed by a random number string. This issue, first reported around August 14th, stemmed from a bug within Bungie's name moderation system.
Bungie acknowledged the problem on Twitter (X), stating, "We're investigating an issue causing a large number of account names to be changed by our Bungie name moderation tool. More info, including a free name change token for all players, is coming tomorrow."
Bungie's moderation typically flags and changes names violating terms of service (offensive language, personal information, etc.). However, this error affected numerous players with perfectly acceptable names, some using the same name since 2015.
Bungie swiftly launched an investigation, confirming the widespread nature of the problem via multiple tweets. The following day, they announced a server-side fix to prevent further incidents: "The issue causing mass Bungie name changes has been identified and resolved. A server-side fix is in place."
They reiterated their plan to distribute free name change tokens to all players as a further remedy. "We'll share more details as they become available," they added.
Bungie urges players to remain patient while they resolve this unexpected issue. Affected players can anticipate receiving free name change tokens and further updates from Bungie soon.
