Marvel Snap's Second Anniversary: Mastering the New Doctor Doom 2099
Marvel Snap continues its second-year run by introducing alternate versions of beloved characters. This time, it's the formidable Doctor Doom, reimagined as his 2099 variant. This guide explores optimal deck strategies featuring this powerful addition.
Understanding Doctor Doom 2099
Doctor Doom 2099 is a 4-cost, 2-power card with a unique ability: "After each turn, add a DoomBot 2099 to a random location if you played (exactly) 1 card." These DoomBot 2099s (also 4-cost, 2-power) possess the "Ongoing: Your other DoomBots and Doom have +1 Power" ability. Crucially, this buff applies to both DoomBot 2099s and regular Doctor Doom cards.
The strategy revolves around playing exactly one card per turn after summoning Doom 2099. Early placement of Doom 2099 maximizes DoomBot 2099 deployment, potentially yielding a significant power boost. Combining him with cards like Magik can further amplify his impact. Ideally, Doom 2099 functions as a 17-power card (at minimum), with even greater potential depending on timing and synergy.
However, there are caveats. The random placement of DoomBots presents a risk of power dilution or allowing opponents to seize locations. Furthermore, Enchantress, recently buffed, completely negates the DoomBot 2099 power boost.
Top-Tier Doctor Doom 2099 Decks
Optimizing Doom 2099 requires decks that facilitate playing one card per turn. This naturally complements Ongoing effect strategies. Here are two effective examples:
Deck 1: Spectrum-focused Ongoing Deck
This budget-friendly deck (only Doom 2099 is a Series 5 card) offers flexibility. Early Doom 2099 placement, aided by Psylocke or Electro, is ideal. Alternatively, focus on spreading Doctor Doom's power or leveraging Spectrum's buffs. Cosmo protects against Enchantress, a crucial consideration.
Deck 2: Patriot-style Deck
Another cost-effective deck (again, only Doom 2099 is Series 5), this follows a Patriot strategy. Early-game cards like Mister Sinister and Brood set the stage for Doom 2099, followed by Blue Marvel and Doctor Doom or Spectrum. Zabu mitigates the cost of 4-cost cards. Flexibility is key; sometimes skipping a DoomBot 2099 to play two 3-cost cards on the final turn (like Patriot and a discounted Iron Lad) is advantageous. However, this deck is highly vulnerable to Enchantress, necessitating strategic counterplay. Super Skrull helps counter other Doom 2099 decks.
Is Doctor Doom 2099 Worth the Investment?
While the accompanying cards (Daken and Miek) are relatively weak, Doctor Doom 2099 is a worthwhile acquisition. His power and deck-building flexibility make him a meta staple. Using Collector's Tokens is recommended if available, but securing him this month is highly advised. He's poised to become one of Marvel Snap's most impactful cards, barring any significant nerfs.
