Dragon Quest XII remains under development, with information to be revealed gradually, according to series creator Yuji Horii.
During a recent livestream with his radio show group, KosoKoso Hōsō Kyoku, Horii confirmed that the Square Enix development team is diligently working on Dragon Quest XII. This marks the first update since May 2024, following the passing of key figures Akira Toriyama (character designer) and Koichi Sugiyama (composer). The lead producer, Yu Miyake, also departed to head Square Enix's mobile game division around that time.
Recent restructuring at Square Enix and a lack of updates had sparked fan concerns about the game's potential cancellation. However, Horii's statement allays these fears, assuring fans that development continues.

Announced during the franchise's 35th-anniversary celebrations, Dragon Quest XII will be the first main series installment since 2017's Dragon Quest XI: Echoes of an Elusive Age. Square Enix has since reported that the Dragon Quest III HD-2D Remake surpassed sales projections, achieving 2 million units sold.
