Counterplay Games, the studio behind the PlayStation 5 launch title Godfall, may have quietly closed its doors. This news comes from a LinkedIn post by an employee of Jackalyptic Games, indicating that Counterplay has 'disbanded.' Since the release of Godfall in 2020, the studio has remained silent, with no new game announcements following their debut title.
Despite being one of the first titles announced for the PS5, Godfall failed to captivate gamers. Even after a significant update in 2021, the game's repetitive gameplay and underwhelming narrative hindered its ability to retain a substantial player base. While not entirely panned, Godfall's lukewarm reception and poor sales may have been too much for Counterplay to overcome.
The LinkedIn post, shared by PlayStation Lifestyle, mentioned that Jackalyptic Games was collaborating with Counterplay on a new project that didn't reach 2025. The wording of the post suggests that Counterplay's disbandment may have occurred around the end of 2024. Since the release of Godfall on Xbox on April 7, 2022, Counterplay has remained largely silent, making the possibility of a quiet disbandment less surprising.
If confirmed, Counterplay Games' closure would add to a growing list of studio shutdowns in the gaming industry. Sony recently closed Firewalk Studios after the underwhelming performance of Concord shortly after its September 2024 launch. Additionally, Sony shut down mobile developer Neon Koi in October 2024 to redirect resources to more successful projects. Unlike these studios, Counterplay's potential end would not be due to actions by a parent company but would still highlight the challenges smaller studios face in today's competitive market.
The rising costs of game development and heightened expectations from both players and investors make it increasingly difficult for games to succeed. Even highly anticipated titles are not immune, as seen with 11 Bit Studios' layoffs in late 2024 due to profitability issues. While the specific reasons for Counterplay's reported disbandment remain unclear, similar industry challenges likely contributed. The studio has yet to issue an official statement, leaving fans and the gaming community waiting for further information. For now, the outlook appears uncertain for those hoping for new releases from Counterplay or further support for Godfall.
