HBO is reportedly in advanced negotiations with acclaimed actor John Lithgow, known for his role as Lord Farquaad in Shrek, to portray the iconic Hogwarts headmaster Albus Dumbledore in its upcoming Harry Potter series. While HBO remains tight-lipped, Variety reports that a deal is imminent. This follows earlier speculation in November that Mark Rylance was a frontrunner for the role.
"We understand the significant interest surrounding this project and the resulting speculation," an HBO spokesperson stated. "We will only confirm casting decisions once contracts are finalized."
Lithgow's extensive filmography includes notable roles in The World According to Garp, Terms of Endearment, Footloose, Dexter, and The Crown, showcasing his remarkable range.

The series will prioritize British talent, mirroring the films. This aligns with the reported involvement of J.K. Rowling in the casting process.
Announced in April 2023, the Harry Potter series aims to be a faithful adaptation of the books, promising a more detailed and nuanced narrative than the film adaptations allowed. The series will be helmed by Succession producers Francesca Gardiner and Mark Mylod, with Mylod also contributing writing experience from Game of Thrones.
