Warner Bros. is creating a unified narrative universe, connecting the upcoming Hogwarts Legacy sequel with the new HBO Harry Potter TV series. Discover the details below.
Warner Bros. Interactive confirmed a Hogwarts Legacy sequel is in development and will connect with HBO's Harry Potter series (debuting in 2026). The original game's massive success (over 30 million copies sold) fueled this decision.
David Haddad, president of Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment, told Variety that collaboration with Warner Bros. Television is key to creating a unified narrative. While the game is set in the 1800s, it will share thematic and "big-picture storytelling elements" with the TV series.
Details on the HBO series remain limited, but Casey Bloys, Chairman and CEO of HBO & Max Content, confirmed it will delve into the iconic books. The challenge lies in organically integrating the game's narrative with the series, bridging the significant time gap.
The success of Hogwarts Legacy reignited franchise interest across all media, according to Haddad. However, J.K. Rowling will have minimal direct involvement in managing the franchise, as reported by Variety. While Warner Bros. Discovery keeps her informed, the studio prioritizes collaborative decision-making.
Rowling's past controversial statements led to a boycott of Hogwarts Legacy in 2023, which ultimately failed to impact the game's immense sales. Importantly, her views will not be reflected in the game or the HBO series.
With the HBO series aiming for a 2026 or 2027 release, the Hogwarts Legacy sequel is unlikely to launch before then. Warner Bros. Discovery CFO Gunnar Widenfels highlighted the sequel as a high priority. Considering the development time required, a 2027-2028 release seems plausible.
