Warhorse Studios confirms: Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2 (KCD2) will launch DRM-free. Despite online speculation, the medieval RPG will not include any digital rights management (DRM) technology.
Following player concerns and misinformation circulating online, Warhorse Studios' PR head, Tobias Stolz-Zwilling, explicitly stated during a recent Twitch stream that KCD2 will not utilize Denuvo DRM or any other DRM system. He addressed the confusion directly, emphasizing that previous discussions about DRM were misconstrued.
Stolz-Zwilling stated unequivocally, "KCD 2 will not have Denuvo, or any DRM at all. We never confirmed otherwise. There were discussions, some misalignment, and misinformation, but ultimately, there will be no Denuvo." He urged players to cease inquiries about DRM, saying, "Please, let's close this case. Stop asking about Denuvo in every post!" He further stressed that any unconfirmed information regarding KCD2's DRM status is inaccurate.
The absence of DRM is welcome news to many gamers who associate DRM, particularly Denuvo, with performance issues and negative gameplay experiences. Denuvo, while designed as anti-piracy software, has faced criticism for its potential impact on game performance.
Denuvo's product manager, Andreas Ullmann, has acknowledged the negative perception surrounding the technology, attributing it to misinformation and confirmation bias. He described the strong negative reaction as "toxic."
Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2 is set for release in February 2025 on PC, PS5, and Xbox Series X|S. The game, set in medieval Bohemia, follows Henry, a blacksmith's apprentice, as he confronts a devastating event in his village. Players who contributed at least $200 to the KCD2 Kickstarter campaign will receive a free copy of the game.
