The Krusty Burger is a health inspector's worst nightmare, famously giving rise to the Krusty Burger, the Ribwich, The Clogger, and the so-called "Steamed Hams" (according to Principal Skinner). This set includes seven minifigures, featuring Krusty the Clown, Sideshow Bob, Homer Simpson, and Officer Lou. You can get it for $209.99 starting June 4, though LEGO Insiders can order early access beginning June 1. Sign up for a free LEGO Insiders account here.

To dive deeper into this set's creation, we spoke with its designer. Ann Healy is a 39-year-old Senior Model Designer who has been with the LEGO Group for six years. Below, lightly edited for clarity, are her insights on developing LEGO The Simpsons: Krusty Burger, the first new LEGO Simpsons release in nearly ten years.

What other LEGO sets have you contributed to over your six-year career?

Healy: I spent three years working on the LEGO Friends series. A few years back, I had the chance to work on a personal Disney favorite: The Sanderson Sisters’ Cottage set from Hocus Pocus. That project was years in development before launch, and I'm very proud of the result.

More recently, I joined the LEGO Icons team. Among last year’s releases, I designed the McLaren MP4/4 & Ayrton Senna set and the Poinsettia LEGO Botanicals set.

What motivated the return to The Simpsons theme after such a long break?

Healy: We observed that even ten years after the last Simpsons set, LEGO fans still held a strong affection for the series. Market research confirmed The Simpsons' powerful global brand loyalty. Creating the Krusty Burger in LEGO form felt like a natural next step for the product line and allowed us to introduce entirely new minifigures.

LEGO designers often build in their free time, working towards builds that they hope will one day become sets.“

Interestingly, the original Simpsons House and Kwik-E-Mart sets were among the last LEGO sets I bought before joining the company. In my first week, I spotted an early Krusty Burger prototype on an office shelf. For context, LEGO designers frequently build in their spare time, hoping their creations might one day become official sets. It inspired me, making me hopeful I might one day work on something similar.

Five years later, to my amazement, our Head of Marketing took that same prototype down and announced it was time to revisit The Simpsons! As a lifelong fan, I volunteered immediately. I could hardly believe my good fortune.

Could you walk us through the design and build process? Approximately how many times did you reconstruct the entire model during development?

Healy: I began by refining the original prototype, establishing the layout, and planning the instruction sequence. I started digitally, then moved to a physical build. I continually switched between digital and physical versions to ensure everything worked with actual bricks. We held regular design check-ins where I presented progress and gathered input from our Creative Lead and fellow designers.

I also held several reviews with our IP partner, sharing updates and incorporating their feedback on the model and minifigures. Additionally, I participated in internal reviews with our Model Governance and Building Experience teams, where we built the set step-by-step, assessed construction, evaluated the play experience, and tested structural integrity.

I didn't count every rebuild, but I estimate at least 20 full reconstructions. The final time I built the Krusty Burger set was when the first production boxes arrived from the factory—a final quality check build!

Unlike Moe's Tavern, the Kwik-E-Mart, or the Simpsons' house, Krusty Burger isn't a fully detailed location in the show. Which episodes did you use to design the layout and features?

Healy: Disney was incredibly supportive, providing reference images and layouts where possible. I also watched countless Simpsons episodes to translate the animated world into a tangible, interactive playset.

We referenced Season 20, Episode 21, “Coming to Homerica,” most heavily because it highlights the Mother Nature Burger, which is referenced multiple times in this LEGO set. The “Ribwich” from Season 14, Episode 12, “I'm Spelling as Fast as I Can,” also appears.

Other notable episodes we referenced include:

Season 6, Episode 15, “Homie the Clown” – Homer performs at a Krusty Burger. Season 12, Episode 13, “Day of the Jackanapes” – Bart and Sideshow Bob visit Krusty Burger. Season 10, Episode 1, Lard of the Dance” – Homer attempts to sell grease from the restaurant.Season 7, Episode 15, “Bart the Fink” – Depicts the IRS taking over the burger joint.Season 19, Episode 1, “He Loves to Fly and He D'ohs” – Homer hides in the Krusty Zone ball pit. Season 15, Episode 10, “Diatribe of a Mad Housewife” – Shows the Krusty Burger drive-thru sign. Season 21, Episode 4, "Treehouse of Horror XX" – Features Krusty Burger in “Don't Have a Cow, Mankind.”

What is your favorite subtle Easter egg in the set?

Healy: Above the drive-thru window, there’s a kitchen order screen showing a request for 700 burgers. This is a nod to the Season 5 episode “Boy-Scoutz 'n the Hood,” where Krusty foolishly opens an offshore Krusty Burger on an oil rig.

What was the toughest design challenge, and how did you solve it?

Healy: The most rewarding challenge was constructing the large Krusty Burger sign from LEGO bricks. Our IP partner was very particular about the proportions of Krusty’s face on the sign, providing references and advice to capture his look authentically. They even sent us hand-drawn sketches of Krusty the Clown! A colleague with a background in illustration used his expertise to perfect Krusty's features in brick form.

Additionally, making the heavy sign stand securely on a single axle was difficult. Our project's Element Lead suggested using a new component she was developing—an axle sleeve—to increase the rod's weight capacity. This innovation worked perfectly.

The most rewarding challenge of designing this set was building the Krusty Burger Sign with LEGO bricks.“

Is this a standalone revival, or can we anticipate more LEGO Simpsons sets soon?

Healy: According to LEGO Group and partner policies, I can't comment on future products. However, as a massive Simpsons fan myself, I sincerely hope fans enjoy this set!
