Tantalus Media, the studio behind acclaimed Nintendo remasters like The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess HD and Skyward Sword HD, has been revealed as the developer of the upcoming Luigi's Mansion 2 HD for Nintendo Switch. The original Luigi's Mansion: Dark Moon debuted on the Nintendo 3DS in 2013 as part of Nintendo's "Year of Luigi" celebration. This Switch remake, announced last September and confirmed for release on June 27th, sees Luigi once again battling ghosts in Evershade Valley to recover the fragments of the Dark Moon and thwart King Boo.
While the June 27th launch date rapidly approaches, the developer remained a secret until recently. VGC confirmed Tantalus Media's involvement, replacing the original developer, Next Level Games, as credited in Luigi's Mansion 2 HD. Tantalus Media's extensive Nintendo portfolio also includes the Switch port of Sonic Mania and contributions to the Age of Empires Definitive Editions.
Initial reviews for Luigi's Mansion 2 HD are positive, praising it as another high-quality Nintendo remaster, similar to the recent Super Mario RPG and Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door remakes. However, the game has experienced pre-order issues mirroring those of Paper Mario, with Walmart cancelling some orders.
Despite this, the confirmation of Tantalus Media's role just days before launch follows a pattern of Nintendo keeping developer information under wraps until release, as seen with the Super Mario RPG remake's developer, ArtePiazza. The developer of Mario & Luigi: Bowser's Inside Story + Bowser Jr.'s Journey remains undisclosed, suggesting this approach may continue for future Nintendo titles.
