A recently uploaded Donald Trump mod for the popular game Marvel Rivals has been removed from Nexus Mods, a leading platform for game modifications. The mod, which replaced Captain America's in-game model with that of Donald Trump, sparked controversy and ultimately violated Nexus Mods' established policies regarding sociopolitical content.
Marvel Rivals, a hero shooter developed by NetEase Games, has quickly gained millions of players since its release. Players frequently utilize mods to customize their gameplay experience, ranging from cosmetic skin changes to more significant model replacements. The Trump mod, however, crossed a line for Nexus Mods. Attempts to locate the mod now result in an error message, indicating its removal. A similarly themed Joe Biden mod has also been removed.
The ban is consistent with Nexus Mods' 2020 policy against mods involving US sociopolitical issues. This policy, enacted during the highly contested 2020 presidential election, aims to maintain a neutral platform and avoid potentially inflammatory content.
The removal of the mod has generated mixed reactions on social media. Many players found the mod inappropriate, highlighting the incongruity between Captain America's image and that of Donald Trump. Others expressed dissatisfaction with Nexus Mods' policy, arguing against censorship of political imagery. It's worth noting that while this specific mod has been removed, other Trump-themed mods remain available for various games on the platform, including Skyrim, Fallout 4, and XCOM 2.
NetEase Games, the developer of Marvel Rivals, has yet to comment publicly on the use of character mods, including those depicting controversial figures. The company is currently focused on addressing other game-related issues such as bug fixes and resolving wrongful account bans.
