Nexus Mods, a popular modding platform, is facing backlash after removing over 500 mods in a single month from the game Marvel Rivals. The controversy centers on the removal of two mods that replaced Captain America's head with images of Joe Biden and Donald Trump.
The platform's owner, TheDarkOne, clarified on Reddit that both mods were removed simultaneously to prevent accusations of political bias. Despite this, TheDarkOne reports receiving threats and abuse following the removals.
“We took down the Biden mod the same day as the Trump mod to be fair. Yet, YouTube commentators seem to be ignoring that fact,” TheDarkOne stated. The owner also revealed that the platform has received death threats and other hateful messages.
This isn't the first time Nexus Mods has sparked debate over mod removals. A similar incident occurred in 2022 when a Spider-Man Remastered mod replacing rainbow flags with American flags was removed. At the time, the platform publicly affirmed its commitment to inclusivity and its policy of removing content that contradicts this principle.
TheDarkOne concluded, "We won't engage with those who find this objectionable."
